A Better 2020

2020 Balloons

Setting unrealistic goals and talking about self-improvement is a very easy thing to do. In the hypothetical situation that you’ve probably already created in your head, everything is possible. Yet the problem with that is that the “everything is possible” concept is achievable, as long as it’s easy and fast. This isn’t how anything in life works. Not many things come in easy and fast, unless you have practiced and done it for a while. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to improve, and for wanting to aim for the stars. The issue is that many people easily give up on their goals when they don’t see immediate results.

All of this can be solved. However, it all depends as to what type of goal/expectation you have set for yourself. There are two types of goals, as I see it: there are the ones where you aim for self-improvement, and there are others where you aim to help those around you. I believe that there are different, as well as similar steps one should take before setting a definite goal.

Self-Improvement:

New Years mark the desire of people to become a better version of themselves. This is great, until they set unrealistic goals that follow a short-term type of plan. For any great results to come, you have to be patient and consistent. Good things come with time.

Not only that, but it’s important to set a goal that a) is realistic and b) you really want to achieve. What do I mean about setting a realistic goal? Don’t set a goal like “enter the NBA after highschool.” Set a goal that you will be able to achieve with the current resources that you have. It’s also important for you to set a goal that you actually want to achieve. Yes, it sounds stupid, but many goals that are set are based on what others want you to do. Normally people follow what others think is best for them, and don’t take into consideration what they truly want to improve about themselves.

Social Improvement:

This one is tricky because this is very different for every person. However, the overall goal that people should consider is how to improve their treatment towards others. Sometimes we can be too judgemental, rude, or even unempathetic without realizing it. Being kind to others, without being asked can and will make other people’s days better. It costs nothing to be nice.

It’s a new year, which means it’s a new you. However, something important that I also want to highlight is that you don’t necessarily need to wait until a new year, a new month, a new week, nor a new day to be better. If things aren’t going your way, take 10-20 minutes to collect yourself, and then you can start over.

Overall, make sure to make changes at your own pace, and whenever you feel comfortable to change. After all, this is your life, so aim to be the best version of yourself that you can be.
