Don’t Worry About College

As I was finishing my college application, I had the option to apply to be considered for a full ride at my dream university. I struggled for days with the question they had asked me to answer. “What are your future ambitions and how will studying [here] help you achieve those ambitions?” Until a few months ago, I didn’t even know what I wanted to study, and I’m still not completely sure of that. But that’s okay. I don’t need to decide this instant what I want to do.

Here’s my advice to you, especially to the juniors. It’s okay to not know what you want to do, or what you want to study. Yes, for a lot of universities you have to choose a major and what not; however, it’s okay to change that major later. We’re still young, we have no idea what the future holds for us. Don’t stress or worry if you don’t know what you want to do with your life. You have your whole life to figure out what you want to do. You can change majors, and even careers. You do not have to stick to the first thing you chose.

What matters the most is that we do something we care about, and that we enjoy doing. “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” The purpose of life should not be to follow the norm and do what is expected of you. Do what you want, and what makes you happy. After all, it’s your life. You are the author of your own story, so you choose your path.

Applying to colleges will be stressful, and you will feel a lot of pressure to choose the “right college”. Don’t worry about that because wherever you may end up, you will be able to achieve great things as long as you put time and effort into it.
