Spotify vs Apple Music

When it comes to music streaming services, Spotify and Apple Music are most likely your top choices. Many people use these apps pretty much everyday and if you are like me, these are a must-have. Did you wonder which one of them is better? Well, no worries I got you. We will review 5 important categories (music, podcasts, features, devices, and price) to make a decision.

If your goal is to discover new music, then Spotify might be the perfect platform for you. Spotify is well-known for having some of the best song recommendation algorithms out there. It recommends music that you’ve never heard before that aligns with your personal interests. It is also very easy to discover new music thanks to the “Discover Weekly” playlist. Even though Apple Music does recommend new songs, it is not as personalized and accurate as the Spotify algorithm. Spotify literally makes a playlist for every music genre that you’ve ever listened to. The “Daily Mixes” are wonderful as well. Now, when it comes to the amount of songs one can save at the song library, Spotify is also the winner. Spotify song library is unlimited, while Apple can store up to 100,000. On the other hand, if you have a very niche music taste, then Apple Music could be a better fit because it has more number of songs available and includes more unknown artists than Spotify. If you listen to very well known music artists, you’ll find them in both platforms with no problem at all.

When it comes to podcasts there is no denying that Spotify does have more options to offer. Apple Music has a few scattered podcasts, but you can find more free podcasts on the App Store. Spotify has more than 700,000 podcasts from different genres. It also includes a variety of ebooks and radio stations. You can find so many interesting and different things there to listen to.

When it comes to features, Apple Music has some very cool ones that Spotify does not include. For example, Apple has the lyrics feature which allows you to see the lyrics while listening to a song. In addition, you can play a specific part just of the song by simply tapping on a lyric line. Spotify on the other hand, only shows you some parts of lyrics for only a few selected songs. Another Apple feature that Spotify does not have is the display of a song’s music video. Spotify does this for some songs, but it only lets you see a few seconds of the video on a loop. However, an incredibly useful feature that only Spotify has is crossfade. Crossfade blends one song into another without causing an awkward pause. This is beyond useful for events such as parties when you want music to flow naturally. Apple hasn’t stayed behind and has created the EQ music feature. What this does is that it allows you to change the low, middle, and high sounds of songs. This is more useful for people who are into song engineering, not so much for casual listeners. Crossfade is a more practical feature for the majority of the population.

Both platforms can be used on devices such as phones, computers, speakers, etc. The only difference is that Spotify, unlike Apple Music, can be used in a broader variety of devices such as Google Home and gaming consoles. If you own many Apple products, then Apple Music could work better since your songs can be synced up with your icloud. Now when it comes to connecting devices, Spotify is a clear winner. The Spotify connect feature allows you to use your phone as a remote to play music on any device you signed onto. Apple does have Airplay, but it is not as strong as Spotify’s feature.

Although prices may vary from country to country, both platforms cost pretty much the same. The main difference is that Spotify offers a free version. This version is somewhat limited because you cannot enjoy all of the features the app possesses, which is why Spotify Premium is more recommended. Apple does not include a free version. Both of them do include a free trial of their paid versions.

After comparing both streaming services, I came to the conclusion that there isn’t one better than the other. It really depends on what you are looking for. If you want to discover new music, then Spotify is the one. But if you want to enjoy special features like music lyrics and video, then Apple Music could be a great choice. The best thing to do is to try both platforms and see which one works best for you.
