Weirdest Sport

Cheese rolling is a sport that is played in Gloucester, England every year. The sport consists of throwing a 7-9 pound double Gloucester cheese, that is traditionally made in a circular shape, down on Cooper’s Hill, an ridiculous steep slope. Only 14 contestants can participate per round, and their goal is to try and catch the cheese as they hurdle down the slope. However, since it is extremely difficult to catch the cheese once it is thrown down, the contestant that crosses the finish line first is the winner.

This sport is extremely dangerous since the participants throw themselves down a hill and can rarely gain back their balance. An average of 25 people are injured from cheese rolling annually and are taken by paramedics to the hospital. Although it has been recommended to halt the cheese rolling event, the locals continue to participate in this sport.

The exact origin of the sport is not certain, but it is thought that it has roots all the way back to the 1800s. Some people credit ancient Romans to have been created a tradition to throw things down the slope. It is also thought to be a pagan ritual since bundles of burning brushwood were rolled down the hill to represent a New Year.
